Door to Opportunity

New owners receive key to their home
Today is World Habitat Day! What a great organization! While many non-profit organizations send people to my door asking for money,  Habitat for Humanity has invited me to the Restore for a free hot dog, desserts and prizes.
Don't get me wrong, the folks at Habitat like to receive money to fund their operations, and they're always looking for donations for The Restore, their "thrift store" for cool building stuff, furniture, tools and my personal favorite, doors.
Some women like shoes. I like doors. When I see one off out of its jamb, its hinges flopping lifelessly I'm overcome with emotion. Music plays in my head and I see a white light and blue sky. Flocks of beautiful doors float around overhead like a bevy of graceful doves. I must have that door.
My door fetish can only be satisfied at the Habitat for Humanity's Restore, a retail outlet of donated supplies, furniture and fixtures for the home. There I can, and do, buy as many doors as I want. There I can find kitchen doors, back doors, and storm doors, doors with windows, and best of all, doors with the pricey hardware already attached. All I need is a room with a doorway. Last week I scored two nice wide louvered closet doors, They will soon be reborn as an attractive screen to keep my neighbor from ogling my fat belly when I'm in the hot tub.
My favorite store (rhymes with door)

Habitat for Humanity offers the most interesting volunteer opportunities, whether at the Restore or working on a house or helping out at the office, you'll feel a sense of "hands on." Oh, I should mention the folks at Habitat believe it's ok for a woman to swing a hammer, as long as it's not at her husband.

I hope you celebrate today, wherever you live. Maybe in your community they're giving out piping hot lobster tails with drawn butter. I'll be happy with my hot dog and a chance to see if there are any fresh doors for me. Be still, my heart!
