Term Termination

I heard of a new disorder last night while listening to the radio, an electronic device that can be informative.
The disorder is called "Microsleep" and means a very, very short nap. We used to call that "nodding," but that name doesn't lend itself well to sophisticated medical insurance claims.
Nodding was a perfectly acceptable form of rest, end has been embraced by many famous people, but will no longer be exempt from the stigma of a disease. Microsleeping is dangerously akin to Narcolepsy, which is a legitimate disorder affecting many people.

Famous person: Nodding or Microsleeping?
Reporter being monitored for microsleeping.
Cat-napping, nodding, dozing off, or catching some Z's can no longer be excused as innocent activity. Be advised: If you do this at work, you may get caught and turned over to Human  Resources, where your activity will be deemed a medical problem and you may have to collect disability payments for the rest of your working years!

Another term got dumped yesterday. Aspergers Syndrome no longer belongs to the Autism Spectum Disorders.  It has been re-named Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder, and roughly means temper tantrum.
Available at Amazon: Under $50 for paperback.

So, like the former planet, Pluto, Asperger's is gone. Another great word: Poof!

I still miss the old medical terminology that has been dumped. It was so colorful! Yellow Fever, Black Plague, and Scarlet Fever were among our grandparent's worst fears. Now their only fear is that the casino might be  closed for high water.

Some things are best left alone. I'll continue to call a fatty liver a fatty liver, even if no one knows what that is. People should just be glad they don't have the King's Evil, or Consumption or,  heaven help us, Black Vomit.

The experts who insist on taking away our best words and terms are what used to be called imbeciles, idiots, morons, dolts and nitwits. I have thoroughly searched for a modern, legitimate medical or psychological term replacement for any of these words and have found none. I'm open to suggestion; I always aim high when it comes to political correctness. I wonder what Fatty Liver feels like?

  1. This is a great post! I am always struggling with how to teach this stuff to my students for Psychopathology. I want them to know that these words were once medical terminology - yet not offend any of them. Kids these days are so sensitive.
