The Most Interesting Man in the World
On Saturday I ran into this gentleman at a Mexican Restaurant in Cincinnati. I recognized him from the Dos Equis commercials on TV as "The most interesting man in the world." I decided to find out why he had such an illustrious reputation.
I greeted him and introduced myself. He said nothing. He just stared at me with his intent and rigid eyes. I sensed immediately I must have offended him.
Then I meekly apologized for bothering him when he was obviously busy. Again he just stared at me. I couldn't help glancing at his hat, so I said, "Nice hat!" He was as stiff and silent as my Uncle Harvey at his own funeral.
I began to apologize again, but then realized he might not speak English, but It appeared as though he were offering me the Dos Equis beer in his hand. I reached out and took it, but my gesture caused the poor old guy to fall flat on his face in the middle of the restaurant. I was humiliated and ashamed, so I slipped back to my table and hid my face behind the world's biggest burrito.
I learned something. Silence makes a person look deep and introspective. Standing perfectly still and staring straight ahead is very intimidating. Who knows what's inside this guy? He's not talking. I fully understand now why he is "the most interesting man in the world."
