If I seem emotional today it's because my power company has offered to help me save money. I received a very nice letter from them on really nice glossy paper. It starts, "Dear Mary." That tells me they're friends of mine, because few people know that's my real name. And they say corporations aren't people! Those sweet folks at the power company are offering to install a small device near our air conditioner. The device will know when too many people are staying cool and will automatically turn mine off. Is that a great deal or what? Well there's more. The power company is prepared to give me a CREDIT of as much as $35.00 as soon as they install it. Not only that, for each time they turn off my air conditioner they will issue ANOTHER CREDIT! Those credits could amount to - wait for it - as much as $8 per summer. Holy hot flashes! That's a whopping 9 cents a day, just for being sweaty and sticky for awhile.

Our A/C switch |
It's heartening to know that big, rich power companies care about little people like us. I hope more utilities follow their lead. The water company probably knows better than us when we need water, and I'm sure they'll give us a few cents for turning the water off in the middle of my shower. We are really lucky to have the utilities on our side.
I love America.
