Tomorrow's Real Post

When I write a blog the night before the next days' post, the date gets screwed up, making you think it was the day before the day of the post. So I'm titling tomorrow's post "Tomorrow's Real Post,  even though I'm writing it tonight, which is actually last night, since I have to go to the airport tomorrow morning, which is for you, really today.

In a big family, there's never an end to the endings or a beginning to the beginnings. Everything mooshes together at awkward times, like today. I've been feeling out of sorts for nearly a week, sneezing and sniffling. The time since Thanksgiving has disappeared, and here it is November 29. Just yesterday, it seems, it was so warm and fun outside. Now it's cold and unfriendly, driving us indoors for the season. Now we're stuck in the house with each other, and nothing to do but fret over celebrations.

We just celebrated a birthday for our daughter, and are planning two more birthdays in December. We're kind of fake-planning the one on the 21st, since that's the last day of the Mayan calendar. It'll be just my luck that those stupid Mayans were wrong and I'll be caught with no birthday gift for my son. It's unlikely the Mayans were wrong. They probably just ran out of paper for more calendars. It happens around here all the time. Oops, no paper. Oops, no ink. It's a good thing we're not in the calendar business. Come to think of it, the Mayans weren't so hot at it either.

So I say, relax. Let's enjoy the coziest part of the year. Light the fire. Make excuses and skip the Christmas party. Forget shopping. After 11 months of work and stress, let's give ourselves a break. At the time of the year when we're burned out and most needful of peace and rest, why do we stuff the holiday season with obligations and tension? I don't like saying, "Wow, I'm glad that's over!"
I much prefer, "Huh? Did something happen?"

I'm going to relax from now until January first. I'm done. No stressful shopping for me! The only holiday decoration you're going to see at this house is the snow shovel on the porch.
