National Peanut Day

Yesterday was National Peanut Day.  My son purchased three huge bags of raw peanuts to make "boiled peanuts," a southern favorite. The peanut is actually a legume,- like beans and peas. Like their cousins, these orbs are quite delicious when boiled in a spicy brine for about 4 hours. It's only then they're worthy to be called "goober peas."
We selected Mississippi peanuts, a no-nonsense variety that would make Mr. Peanut proud, and popular.
Louisianans love everything about food, from the hunting and fishing to the boiling pot to the tummy. It's not uncommon to find the boiling pots billowing steam out on the driveway, a signal that this will be a public feast, where the more experienced will know how to extract the brine from the crawfish cranium.

While our peanuts cooked on the patio, Gnomie relaxed in the pool. Before long the
aroma of boiled peanuts
lured him to the boiling pot
for a sniff. I like travelling
with Gnomie. He doesn't
talk; his needs are simple.
He's always smiling. I explain things to him often and although he's a bit rigid, he seems to agree with most of my opinions.

I wish everyone were like Gnomie.
I wish you all could have some boiled peanuts.
